Why Support Matters When Building a Business | LaKeisha Carey

When the People Around You Believe in You Before You Believe in Yourself

There is a moment every entrepreneur knows.

You are building something. The vision is clear. The mission feels real. The work is hard but it is yours and you believe in it with everything you have.

And then you look around and realize that the people closest to you are not quite there yet.

Not because they are bad people. But because vision is personal. And sometimes the people who love you most are also the ones who are most afraid of watching you risk something.

That gap, between where you are and where the people around you are, is one of the loneliest places a builder can stand.

And it breaks my heart every single time I hear someone describe it.

What Real Support Looks Like

I think we often get the definition of support wrong.

We think support means writing a big check or having all the answers. But in my experience, the most powerful support looks nothing like that.

It looks like showing up to someone’s event even when you are tired.

It looks like sharing a post because you believe the message deserves a wider audience.

It looks like hiring someone you know when you need a service they provide. Not out of obligation. But out of genuine trust in what they have built.

When someone supports your business intentionally, they are doing something that carries more weight than they probably realize. They are reducing the isolation that comes with building. They are providing proof that your work matters. And they are contributing to the ripple effect of everything you are creating.

Support is not just nice to have. Support is part of the foundation of meaningful work.

The Gift of Being Trusted

I am especially grateful today for a family who has shown me exactly what support in action looks like.

The Rivera family.

They are not just clients. They are family and friends who chose to trust me with something deeply important. Their business. Their nonprofit journey. The intentional steps they are taking to build something that will create real impact in their community.

When someone invites you into their vision at that level, it is not a transaction. It is a declaration of trust. And trust is one of the rarest and most valuable things one person can extend to another.

They could have gone anywhere. But they chose to bring their journey to Carey Consultant Firm. That responsibility is something I carry with care and with gratitude every single day.

A Word for the Builders Who Feel Unseen

If you are reading this in a season where support feels thin, I want to speak directly to you.

Keep going.

Every business that exists today started in a season where only the founder could see it clearly. Every nonprofit making community impact right now started with one person who decided to build even when building was lonely.

The question is never whether the right support will come. The question is whether you will still be standing when it does.

Faith is believing in what you are building before anyone else can see it. Courage is continuing to build anyway.

Keep showing up. Your work will speak for itself.

Gratitude Is a Business Practice

When you choose to be genuinely and publicly grateful for the people who support your work, you honor the people who showed up. You model a culture of appreciation that attracts more of the same. And you remind yourself that the work is landing even on the days when it does not feel like it.

To the Rivera family: thank you. For your trust. For your confidence. For showing me what it looks like when the people around a builder choose to show up fully.

You have not just supported a business. You have contributed to every family that Carey Consultant Firm will go on to help protect. And that legacy belongs to you too.
